The cause of a fire that broke out in an empty warehouse on Portland’s waterfront Monday night remains under investigation, according to Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria.

LaMoria said the fire department was contacted by a boater around 7:10 p.m. after the operator spotted flames inside a commercial building on Maine Wharf. The wharf is located behind the Dry Dock Restaurant and Tavern, which is located on Commercial Street.

The chief said it took firefighters a few minutes to locate the fire because it could only be seen from Portland Harbor. But once it had been located, Lamoria said the fire was quickly extinguished. The building where the fire started houses several fish processing operations, including Bangs Island Mussels.

“It was a small fire in an area that was under renovation,” LaMoria explained.

No injuries were reported.
