Former Sen. Olympia Snowe endorses LePage in gubernatorial race

Former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, a Republican from Maine, on Wednesday threw her support behind Gov. Paul LePage’s re-election bid.

Snowe endorsed LePage during an automated telephone recording that was transmitted to thousands of Mainers on Wednesday night, according to LePage’s campaign spokesman Alex Willette.

“This is Olympia Snowe. To continue economic growth in Maine, I am supporting Paul LePage,” the recording, which was posted on the governor’s campaign website, read in part.

Snowe applauded LePage’s efforts to create new private-sector jobs, lower unemployment, put an end to domestic violence, and support Maine veterans.

A spokesman for Snowe could not be reached Wednesday night.

Willette said Snowe’s support means a lot to the governor’s campaign.

“We were very excited and happy to hear this especially because she is regarded as a major independent leader in the nation. She also hasn’t done much in the way of endorsements since she retired,” Willette said.
