MINEOLA, N.Y. — Yes, it really is Mel Brooks. The comedian makes that assurance to listeners in a recorded call he made for his great-nephew’s campaign for a New York State Assembly seat. Brooks is urging voters in a suburban New York City district to vote for his great-nephew, Todd D. Kaminsky.

The 36-year-old candidate is a former federal prosecutor. He’s a Democrat running against Republican-Conservative Avi Z. Fertig for an open seat representing the city of Long Beach.

In his pitch, Brooks says of Kaminsky: “Aside from a few allergies, which you can’t fault him for, he is bright, which runs in our family.”

But Brooks wisecracks: “And incredibly principled, which does not always run in our family.”
