With 90 percent of the vote in, two candidates for Maine Senate District 25 were neck and neck.

Republican Cathy Manchester, 54, a self-employed real estate agent from Gray, was leading slightly with 50.2 percent, or 10,808 votes.

Democrat Cathy Breen, 49, a former Falmouth town councilor, had 49.8 percent, with 10,724 votes.

The seat was left open when Sen. Richard Woodbury, a Yarmouth independent, didn’t seek re-election.

It was seen as a possible swing district, and independent groups spent tens of thousands of dollars on direct mail.

The district includes Cumberland, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Gray, Long Island, Chebeague Island and part of Westbrook.
