History was made last weekend as Falmouth’s football team won a playoff game for the first time.
The Yachtsmen, coming off a program best 7-1 regular season, earned the No. 3 seed for the playoffs and welcomed No. 6 Morse Friday night, a team they handled in the regular season, 55-14.
The first ever playoff meeting between the schools quickly went Falmouth’s way, as it shot to a 28-0 lead after one period behind a touchdown pass from Noah Nelson to George Gilbert and three TD runs from Connor Aube. A Nelson-to-Aube touchdown pass made it 34-0 at halftime. Aube had another TD run and Nick Wisseman added another to put the Yachtsmen up, 48-0, after three periods and they went on to an easy 48-6 victory.
Aube had 220 yards and four TDs on 12 rushes. Nelson completed 11-of-15 passes for 139 yards and two scores.
Falmouth (8-1) will go to No. 2 York (8-1) for the semifinals Friday. On Sept. 19, the Yachtsmen lost at the Wildcats, 37-14.
Falmouth wasn’t the only victorious local squad, as Yarmouth prevailed in its Western Class C showdown/grudge quarterfinal match at Cape Elizabeth. After losing at home to the Capers in last year’s quarterfinals, 27-14, and dropping a heartbreaker at the gun, 31-28, on Oct. 10, the Clippers fell behind, 6-0, Friday, but went ahead to stay on a 3-yard Lucas Uhl TD run. In the second period, quarterback John Thoma hit Jack Snyder for an 18-yard score and a 14-6 halftime lead. In the fourth quarter, Cape Elizabeth found the end zone, but the two-point conversion failed and Yarmouth’s defense came up big when it mattered as the Clippers prevailed, 14-12.
Yarmouth (now 6-3) got 90 passing yards and a TD from Thoma, 55 rushing yards and a touchdown from Uhl and 58 yards on the ground from Cody Cook.
The Clippers face the daunting task of going to reigning champion Leavitt (8-1) for the semifinals Friday. Yarmouth gave the host Hornets a scare back on Sept. 12, but lost, 20-12. The teams have no playoff history.
Looking ahead, the regional finals are Saturday, Nov. 15, on the fields of the higher remaining seeds. The Class C state final is Friday, Nov. 21 in Orono. The Class B state game is Saturday, Nov. 22 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.
Only Greely failed to produce a win on the opening weekend of the playoffs, as, for the second year in a row, the Rangers were upset by a Westbrook squad they handled during the regular season.
Greely beat the visiting Blue Blazes, 31-6, back on Sept. 26, but Friday, the Rangers fell, 28-15, despite two touchdown runs from Sam Peck. Greely’s season ended at 4-5.
