A Sanford City Council candidate who lost her race by one vote has requested a recount.

Dianne Connolly, who was running to fill the remainder of an unexpired term, lost the seat to Victor DiGregorio in a four-way race.

Connolly was appointed by the council in July to hold the seat until a new councilor could be elected.

City Clerk Sue Cote said it is the first local recount in the 26 years she has worked for the city.

The recount will be scheduled after Nov. 12, the deadline to request recounts for state races through the secretary of state’s office. Cote said she must wait until then because a state recount takes priority over a local recount.

DiGregorio, a former town meeting member, finished with 1,773 votes. Connolly had 1,772 votes.
