BIDDEFORD — Ryan Quinn scored 3:36 into overtime Friday night to give the University of New England a 3-2 victory against Skidmore in an ECAC East men’s hockey opener.

Quinn scored from Jared Melman and David Goff to lift the Nor’easters (2-0) over the Thoroughbreds (1-1).

After falling behind 9:40 into the first period, the Nor’easters tied it just over three minutes later on a power play. Sam Vikich scored from Zeth Zielinski and Quinn.

Skidmore regained the lead 2:58 into the third period, but Trevor Fleurent tied it with 32 seconds left in regulation. Melman and Kyle Williams assisted on the goal, which came with an extra attacker after the goalie was pulled.

Colby Drost finished with 24 saves for the Nor’easters, who had a 41-26 advantage in shots.

CASTLETON STATE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Nick Kovalchik and Will Laking scored two goals apiece for the Spartans (1-1), who scored three times in the third period to beat the Huskies (1-1) in an ECAC East opener at Gorham.

Ryan Mulder stopped 21 shots to record the shutout.

Kyle Shapiro made 28 saves for the Huskies, who were outshot 32-21.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BROWN 5, MAINE 2: Kaitlyn Keon had two goals and Monica Elvin stopped 30 shots as the Bears (2-4) handled the Black Bears (4-6-2) at Providence, Rhode Island.

Abbey Cook of Maine scored her first goal late in the first period, and Emilie Brigham made it 2-2 with a short-handed goal four minutes into the second.

NORWICH 4, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Nicolette Gosselin, Nicole Goebel, Madyson Moore and Madison Gallagher scored for the Cadets (1-1-1) against the Nor’easters (1-1) in an ECAC East opener at Northfield, Vermont.

Courtney Kendall made 31 saves for the Nor’easters.

CASTLETON STATE 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Taylor Steadman, Brianna Keates and Lisa Kilroy each had a goal and an assist as the Spartans (3-0, 3-0 ECAC East) defeated the Huskies (0-1, 0-1) at Rutland, Vermont.
