Portland police say they arrested a man who broke into a flower shop, after the rope he was using to rappel down a fire escape broke during his attempt to flee.

Police said the man entered Harmon’s and Barton’s, a florist shop at 584 Congress St., around 10 p.m. Saturday by using the building’s fire escape.

When the man tried to climb down a rope on the Free Street side of the building, it broke and he landed on the sidewalk, Portland police told WCSH-TV.

The man was treated at the scene and arrested on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief, the TV station reported.

Portland police refused to release the man’s name Sunday night, even though it is a public record.
