FREEPORT — The town of Freeport will hold a recount next week of the municipal ballots cast in a two-way race for an at-large seat on the town council.

Town Clerk Tracey L. Stevens announced Wednesday that incumbent at-large councilor Richard DeGrandpre requested the recount, which will be conducted Monday at 8 a.m. at Freeport Town Hall.

According to the town’s website, political newcomer William Rixon, who taught physics and earth science at Greeley High School for 28 years, defeated DeGrandpre by just six votes. The final totals were 2,076 for Rixon and 2,070 for DeGrandpre.

DeGrandpre is a 12-year veteran of the Freeport Town Council and the owner of R&D Automotive in Freeport. He was also a member of the Freeport Withdrawal Committee, which negotiated a proposed agreement to leave Regional School Unit 5. Voters on Nov. 4 rejected the withdrawal measure.
