The title hopes of the Brunswick boys’ and Mt. Ararat girls’ soccer teams were dashed last week and at press time only one local fall squad is still playing, Brunswick football.

Here’s a glimpse at what happened last week.

Boys’ soccer

Brunswick’s boys’ soccer team, the No. 2 seed in Eastern Class A, riding a 14-game unbeaten streak, went to top-ranked Lewiston for the regional final last Wednesday and took the Blue Devils to the wire before falling, 2-1, to finish 12-3-2.

“We knew we couldn’t shut them out,” said Brunswick coach Mark Roma, whose team tied Lewiston 2-2 in the regular season. “They’re a good team. Our game plan was to absorb the pressure and take control in the second half. That’s what we did at our house. It was going according to script. I told them we had to absorb the first 10 minutes after the half. They were able to sneak a couple quick ones. Our kids have a ton of heart. We refused to give up. They believed in themselves.”

Girls’ soccer

Mt. Ararat’s girls’ soccer team was ranked fifth going into the playoffs, but knocked off No. 4 Hampden Academy and top-seeded Bangor to get to the regional final at second-ranked Edward Little. The teams settled for a 2-2 tie in the regular season and this one was deadlocked, 2-2, after regulation as well, but the Red Eddies got a goal in overtime to win, 3-2, and end the Eagles’ season at 10-5-2.

“We weren’t exactly at the top of our game today,” Mt. Ararat coach Sam Chard said. “We were a little bit behind the ball. The field was a little slippery. Those things happen. (Edward Little) obviously wanted it. They came out hard.”

Football

Brunswick’s football team, the top seed in Eastern B, had a bye in the quarterfinals before returning to action last weekend in the semifinals against fourth-ranked Messalonskee, the only team to beat the Dragons in the regular season (20-7, Oct. 10, in Oakland).

This time around, host Brunswick had what it took to advance, but it didn’t come easily, as the Dragons had to hold on for a 27-20 victory.

That win sent Brunswick to the Eastern B Final where it will host No. 3 Lawrence (8-2) Friday evening. On Oct. 17, the Dragons handled the visiting Bulldogs, 34-14.

The Class B state final is Saturday, Nov. 22 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. If Brunswick gets there, it will meet either Marshwood (10-0) or York (9-1).
