I often bicycle across the Martin’s Point Bridge, and have been struck by the beauty of the pilings on the western side. I find them so evocative of the area’s maritime heritage, much as the abandoned ships near the Route 1 bridge out of Wiscasset had been. Recently, I have taken to asking others what they thought about them, and the 30 or so people I queried had the same response: They add much to the aesthetics of the bridge and it would be sad to lose them.

I am writing you in hopes that someone will think long and hard about the possibility of keeping this symphony in wood after the construction is over.
