Despite his diminutive stature, Baker-Connick was a giant on the pitch, capping his brilliant career by becoming one of the state’s most prolific scorers.

One with a flair for the dramatic.

Baker-Connick, a Cape Elizabeth resident, is a Waynflete lifer and started playing soccer at a young age. He came to the Flyers varsity team as a freshman, was named to the all-conference and all-region teams as a junior and as a striker, enjoyed a standout senior campaign, scoring 18 times and assisting on six other goals.

Highlights included producing a hat trick in a season-opening win over Traip, scoring once against Fryeburg, once against North Yarmouth Academy, delivering a game-turning goal in a pivotal tie at eventual Class B champion Yarmouth, scoring once in a win over Poland, twice apiece in wins over Sacopee and Traip and adding a goal in a win over Gray-New Gloucester.

In the playoffs, Baker-Connick scored his final goal in a quarterfinal round victory over St. Dom’s. The Flyers were then eliminated by eventual champion Maranacook in the semifinals.

“A lot of people were surprised by how well we did,” Baker-Connick said. “I’m happy with how we played. We had great team chemistry.”

Baker-Connick finds his inspiration from several sources.

“My parents and my brother drive me,” he said. “I’m not intimidated by being small.”

Baker-Connick was again named to the all-conference and all-region teams and this fall was given the Steven LaBrecque Memorial Award for sportsmanship, leadership, ability and contribution to team success. He is also on the short list for Class C Player of the Year in the conference and is under consideration for All-New England honors.

Baker-Connick, who mentors youngsters at Reiche School, also plays basketball and lacrosse. He’s not sure if he’ll try to play sports in college. He has an interest in sports management.

A terrific career comes to a close, but Harry Baker-Connick, Waynflete’s Fall Male Athlete of the Year, won’t soon be forgotten.

Coach Brandon Salway’s comment: “Harry had an outstanding final season and career. He’s a player that younger players should try to emulate. He improved every season, displayed a great work ethic, dedication and determination. He was a terrific leader and kept his composure at all times. Harry is the type of player our program hopes to produce. He’ll be missed.“

JULIANNA HARWOOD, Senior-Soccer

Harwood was one of the state’s elite goalkeepers, from the moment she stepped between the pipes as a freshman through her solid senior campaign.

Harwood, a Yarmouth resident and Waynflete lifer, started playing soccer at a young age and first played goalie in middle school, splitting time with teammate Helen Gray-Bauer.

“I liked playing goalie even if I didn’t know how to play it,” Harwood said. “My goalie coach, Aaron Weymouth, taught me everything I know.”

Harwood was the varsity goalie as a freshman, standing out immediately, and as a sophomore and a junior, she backstopped the Flyers to a Class C state championship, making countless clutch saves along the way, earning all-conference honors in the process.

While Waynflete didn’t win a third straight championship this fall, the Flyers did produce another strong record. Harwood shut out six opponents during an 8-1-5 regular season. She helped Waynflete beat Carrabec in the preliminary round, then produced the 30th and final shutout of her career in a 3-0 win over Maranacook in the quarterfinals. The Flyers’ three-peat bid ended with a 1-0 loss to eventual champion Sacopee in the semifinals.

Harwood finished with a career record of 47 wins, eight losses and 10 ties.

“The coaches and teammates I’ve had made me successful,” Harwood said. “Waynflete is an amazing environment thanks to the coaches and (athletic director) Ross (Burdick). I’ve been able to play with special groups.”

Harwood, who also plays basketball (she was part of the Flyers’ Class C title in 2013), takes part in Science Olympiad and reads to youngsters at Reiche School. She is weighing her college options.

Julianna Harwood, Waynflete’s Fall Female Athlete of the Year, has long been synonymous with the Flyers’ success. It’s hard to quantify just how big a role she played in Waynflete’s triumph the past four autumns.

Coach Todd Dominski’s comment: “Julianna’s stats are second to her athleticism, hard work, dedication, leadership and commitment that she brought to the team. She was a special player who brought it every time she stepped on the field. She did everything she could to master her position. Juliana had been a leader ever since she was a freshman. She was highly regarded and respected by all of her teammates and coaches. She was an intense competitor, that truly enjoyed every moment. Juliana worked to earn all of her success. I believe she has been one of the best keepers to ever come through Waynflete and one of the best keepers in the state over the last four years. She leaves the team as a great example of an elite athlete who earned it every day.”
