SANFORD — Santa Claus is coming to town and will have the honor of “flicking the switch” to light the Christmas tree in Central Park Friday night.

The tree lighting comes after the Holly Daze parade, set to step off from Main Street near Dairy Queen and proceed downtown, where it winds down near the Mid-Town Mall.

Holly Daze, a part of the Sanford community over the past several years, is hosted by Sanford Downtown Legacy. Wasco, a Wells-based skylight company with deep roots in Sanford, is a major sponsor.

After the parade and the tree lighting, Santa will meander over to City Hall, where he’ll be the star attraction for everyone who wants to decorate cookies with the jolly old man. Cookie decorating, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and winds down two hours later, costs $5, with proceeds going to the Imelda Fund, to help people in need with fuel costs and emergency heating assistance.

There are a number of events in the lineup for Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m., and Holly Daze winds down around 2 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to noon, folks can have their photo taken with Santa for a $4 fee, an event sponsored by Creteau’s Photography and Altrusa. This event takes place at the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford office inside Townhouse Properties at 883 Main St. As well, literacy volunteers will be reading stories to young people that day.
