PORTLAND — John “Jack” Joyce, 89, formerly of Portland, died Dec. 4 at Togus VA Medical Center.

Joyce was born March 25, 1925, in the Gorham’s Corner section of Portland, to Martin and Delia (Connolly) Joyce.

During World War II, he served honorably in the U.S. Army, taking part in campaigns in Italy, Germany, Austria, North Africa and Japan. Among his military distinctions, Joyce was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism.

Following his return to Portland, he was employed with Jarka Corp. for 50 years as a longshoreman, until his retirement in 1985. He also served with the merchant marine and as a construction worker.

Holding a deep love for his faith and Irish heritage, Joyce was a communicant of St. Dominic’s Church. He also was an avid hunter.

He married Barbara Carey in 1952. She predeceased him on Sept. 24, 1990.

In addition to his wife, Joyce was predeceased by his daughter, Judy Smith; son, Peter Joyce; and brother, Martin F. “Dutchy” Joyce.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda Moore, of Massachusetts, Sharon Greeleaf, of Portland, Nancy Provencher, of Georgia, Maureen Joyce, of Westbrook, and Kathleen Joyce, of Portland; and his sons, John J. Joyce Jr., of Raymond, and Ralph Corbin, of Florida. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation and a funeral were held Monday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home. Burial with military honors followed at Brooklawn Memorial Park.
