As an advocate for fair and humane immigration reform, I heartily support President Obama’s announcement that he will provide relief from deportation for an estimated 5 million undocumented immigrants.

I would have preferred for Congress to fix our broken immigration system, and I hold out hope that Democratic 1st District U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree will eventually help pass reform legislation that includes uniting families and a pathway to citizenship.

The American public supports this and Congress has not acted.

But in the meantime, the president’s action is an important step to reduce deportations that tear families apart and that create unnecessary fear in immigrant communities. I welcome this news that will mean that fewer U.S.-citizen children will be deprived of the love, stability and income of a parent.
