Several people were injured and a major road was shut down Wednesday afternoon when a car hit a school bus in West Bath.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said a 2011 Ford Fiesta driven by Philip Wallace, 30, of Phippsburg crossed the center line on State Road and crashed into a Morse High School bus carrying seven students from its vocational program.
Wallace was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with “significant injuries,” Merry said. A passenger in the Fiesta, Rebecca Dyer, 34, was taken to a local hospital.
The driver of the bus, Raymond Bernier, 48, of Oakland, was not injured but one student was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The sheriff’s department said the road, which crosses the New Meadows River into Brunswick, was shut down for almost three hours.
Merry said it appears that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
