In the Dec. 15 Portland Press Herald, Petros Panagakos (“Another View: Mayhew be advised: No defense for LePage’s insensitive policies”) disapproved of requiring a photo ID on electronic benefits transfer cards issued by the Maine Health and Human Services Department.

Mr. Panagakos claimed that the trading of benefits for illegal drugs has yet to be substantiated. He should climb down from his ivory tower and join the real world.

If he read a Boston paper, he would find instances of drug dealers holding multiple EBT cards and utilizing them for bail money. Massachusetts has given the fox the keys to the chicken coop.

If he believes that the state of Maine is different, he is living in a vacuum. Let’s give the DHHS some aid in fraud prevention.
