The winter sports season has begun in the Mid-Coast and several teams are off to hot starts.

Here’s a glimpse:

Boys’ basketball

Morse’s boys’ basketball team was 3-0 at press time. The Shipbuilders opened with a 57-51 home win over Lincoln Academy, then prevailed at Erskine Academy (76-48) and at home over Belfast (75-63). Morse was home against Medomak Tuesday, go to Mt. View Friday and play at Camden Hills Monday.

Hyde won its opener, 38-29, over Seacoast Christian. Antonine Montgomery led the way with 16 points. After playing host to Sacopee Valley Tuesday and Temple Academy Wednesday, the Phoenix went to A.R. Gould Thursday to cap the 2014 portion of the schedule.

In Eastern A, Brunswick began the year by beating visiting Cony (63-52). The Dragons then lost at home to Edward Little (60-41) and at defending regional champion Hampden Academy (43-32). Brunswick was at Lewiston Tuesday and hosts Oxford Hills Thursday, welcomes Bangor Saturday and plays host to Brewer Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat opened with a tough 67-65 home loss to Messalonskee. After beating visiting Brewer (65-36), the Eagles fell at Oxford Hills (58-51). Mt. Ararat was at at Cony Tuesday and visited Mt. Blue Thursday. The Eagles host Lewiston Saturday and welcome Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Hyde began by downing visiting Seacoast Christian, 49-27. Lilli Allen led the way with 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Lutes Bartlett added 12 points and Timesha Walker finished with 10. The Phoenix hosted Sacopee Valley Tuesday and Temple Academy Wednesday.

Morse lost its first game, 56-46, at Lincoln Academy, then defeated visiting Erskine Academy (38-34) and won at Belfast (46-26). After playing at Medomak Tuesday, the Shipbuilders host Mt. View Friday and play at Camden Hills Monday.

In Eastern A, Brunswick rolled at Cony in the opener (46-13), lost at Edward Little (49-38), then beat visiting Hampden Academy (46-36). After welcoming Lewiston Tuesday and going to Oxford Hills Thursday, the Dragons visit Bangor Saturday and play at Brewer Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat lost at Messalonskee (59-55) to start the season, then fell at home to Oxford Hills (39-33) and won at home over Brewer (58-36). The Eagles hosted Cony Tuesday and welcomed Mt. Blue Thursday, then play at Lewiston Saturday and visit Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Hockey

On the ice, the Brunswick boys have won their first two games: 5-2 at Leavitt and 8-4 at York. The Dragons were home against Oxford Hills Tuesday, visit Edward Little Friday and go to Mt. Ararat Tuesday of next week.

Speaking of the Eagles, they’re 0-2 after losing at home to Windham (3-2) and at Bangor (11-0). Mt. Ararat goes to South Portland Saturday, then hosts Brunswick Tuesday.

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat lost its first two games (7-0 at Lewiston and 5-3 to visiting Cheverus), then handled visiting Winslow (9-3) before losing at Edward Little/Leavitt (7-0) and at home to Lewiston (6-1) to fall to 1-4. After visiting Cheverus Saturday, Mt. Ararat hosts Brunswick Tuesday.

The Dragons dropped their first six outings, capped by home losses to Yarmouth/Freeport (10-0) and York (3-1) last week. After hosting EL/Leavitt Tuesday and Winslow Thursday, Brunswick goes to Lewiston Saturday and plays at Mt. Ararat Tuesday of next week.

Swimming

Mt. Ararat’s boys’ swim team lost at Waterville in its opener, 97-55. The Eagles girls fell at Waterville, 88-75.
