SOUTH PORTLAND — Superintendent of Schools George Entwsitle III isn’t going anywhere soon.

Entwistle, who was recruited by the Lexington, Massachusetts, school district to apply to be its superintendent, was not offered the job last week by the Lexington School Committee.

He was a finalist for the position alongside Deputy Superintendent Kaine Osburn of Naperville Community Unit School District 203 in Illinois, and Mary Czajkowski of the Barnstable, Massachusetts, schools, who was ultimately offered the position.

Before the decision was made, Entwistle was invited to tour the Massachusetts district last week and participate in a public forum. A search committee made its decision late Friday afternoon, Dec. 19.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Lexington. Whenever you tour another district there are always many things to learn,” Entwistle said Monday. “I was very flattered to have been one of three finalists in what was a very high-profile, national search. When it gets down to three finalists, it is the candidate who seems to be the best ‘fit’ that gets selected.”

Entwistle is a Cape Elizabeth native and has been superintendent in Scarborough since early 2011. He was previously superintendent in Belmont, Massachusetts, and Falmouth.

He said the School Board has encouraged him to pursue other opportunities, “but my team and I have a good momentum going at this time, and I think there is some very important and exciting work we need to continue for the foreseeable future.”
