AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine man who spent 17 years in prison for raping and strangling a 14-year-old girl was arrested Tuesday after allegedly attacking a woman in Augusta, police said.

Lorne Sherwood, 45, did not resist Tuesday when he was arrested at his home and charged with assault, terrorizing and creating a police standoff. An arrest warrant was obtained after a woman reported that he’d tried to sexually assault her on Monday, Deputy Police Chief Jared Mills said.

Sherwood was uncooperative Monday night when officers tried to question him, so an officer was stationed outside his home overnight while officers sought an arrest warrant, Mills said.

Police had been aggressive in warning residents about Sherwood’s presence upon his release from prison because he was believed to be at high risk of another offense, Mills said.

“Basically our fears came true last night. It’s obviously a tragic situation but it could have been even worse,” Mills said. “I’m relieved that he’s no longer on the streets.”

Sherwood was 27 and living in Biddeford at the time of the 1995 abduction, rape and beating of a 14-year-old girl whom he grabbed off the street at random. He pleaded guilty to a dozen charges in that case.

He was released from prison in 2013. Because his arrest was a probation violation, he was expected to be held without bail at the Kennebec County Jail. It was not known if he’d hired a lawyer.
