More than 5,000 Maine households, mostly in Oxford County, lost power Thursday night because of high winds, according to Central Maine Power Co.

Nearly 3,700 customers in Oxford County, including more than 1,100 in Dixfield and more than 1,000 in Peru, were in the dark as of 8:45 p.m. but regained power later, according to the power company’s website.

Gail Rice, a spokeswoman for CMP, said most of the outages were due to high winds and most were reported between 7 and 8 p.m. Rice said that if no further complications arose, most homes and businesses would be back on line by about midnight. By 11:30 p.m., 2,739 CMP customers remained in the dark.

“If we have more problems that estimate could be subject to change,” Rice said.

Fewer than 1,000 Emera Maine customers were without power, according to the company.
