It is with so much mourning and regret that we write this letter. Last Wednesday, we talked about how we needed to write a letter to our local newspapers to express our support for our law enforcement officers. We waited too long.

What if we had written sooner? Is it possible that the killings of two New York police officers would have been prevented? We don’t know, but we want to go on record now. We support our law enforcement officers. Law enforcement officers face such tremendous challenges in keeping us safe.

Our question now is: Would it have been different if President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Rev. Al Sharpton had sent a more supportive message in December?

Where is the outrage over the deaths of these young police officers? Will there be mass demonstrations now in support of our law enforcement people?

Maybe New Year’s Eve 2014 would be a time to say “thank you” to those who serve. We can light candles, or we can wear red, white and blue on New Year’s Eve. We can contact our elected officials, and we can stand up and say that while our system isn’t perfect, it is still the best in the world.

Thank you to our law enforcement people and our troops for making America great.
