AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine game wardens are urging snowmobile riders to stay safe — once there’s snow to ride on.

The temperature is dropping again after early season snow melted away with rain and record warmth in December. But most of the state’s riders are going to wait a bit longer for conditions to improve.

The Moosehead Riders hasn’t been able to groom its 80-mile trail system because of poor conditions. John Cobb told Maine Public Broadcasting Network that most of the trails are “wet and swampy.”

Wardens say riders who are eager to hit the trails need to be careful. They say that light snowfall could hide thin ice or rocks and other obstacles.
