CASCO — Maine State Parks are ringing in the new year with free, guided hikes at five state parks.

The hikes are taking place at Lily Bay State Park in Beaver Cove, Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg, Range Ponds State Park in Poland, Sebago Lake State Park in Casco and Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport.

Gov. Paul LePage says more than 5 million people visited Maine during the winter last year. He says the free state park day will remind residents and visitors that the state has “some of the most beautiful state parks, which remain open all-year long.”

Similar initiatives take place in all 50 states on New Year’s Day.
