AUGUSTA — Maine game wardens are warning ice fishermen to stay off thin ice this holiday weekend.

Some lakes and ponds have yet to freeze. And others that froze early in December are now unsafe after the unseasonably warm weather during Christmas week.

Some lakes and ponds are already open to ice-fishing. But some open on Jan. 1.

Wardens say rules vary by district so it’s important to check state regulations before heading onto the ice.

The Inland Fisheries & Wildlife issued an ice fishing update for all Maine regions on December 30, 2014.
