DALLAS PLANTATION — A vacation home in western Maine has been destroyed by a New Year’s Day fire, but nobody was injured.

The fire at the three-story home in Dallas Plantation, near Rangeley, was reported at about 2 p.m. Thursday by somebody who saw smoke.

Rangeley Fire Chief Tim Pellerin tells the Sun Journal by the time he arrived, the home as fully engulfed and the roof was collapsing.

He says the house was about three miles from the nearest hydrant, forcing tankers to wind their way back and forth on narrow roads.

The home was owned by a Massachusetts family, but no one was there at the time. A family member had left earlier in the day.

Pellerin estimated the loss at around $550,000.The cause is under investigation
