Portland Water District officials urged motorists early Saturday evening to avoid Hammond Street in Portland’s Bayside neighborhood while they dealt with a water main break.

The water district posted on its Twitter account that there was a break near 18 Hammond St.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., a crew was dispatched to the scene and dug up a small section of the road. A water district employee could be seen tending to a burst pipe that was spitting water out several feet below the road’s surface.

The main break appeared to be limited to a small section of Hammond Street.
