PORTLAND (AP) — The final public hearing about a federal fishery management plan that could reopen protected New England waters to commercial fishing is set to take place in Portland.
The New England Fishery Management Council is working on a habitat management plan for federal waters from Maine to Rhode Island. The Portland Press Herald reports that the plan could potentially reopen fishing near part of Cashes Ledge, an ecosystem off the southern Maine coast that conservationists want to protect.
A public hearing about the plan is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland. A public comment period about the management plan ends Thursday. New England Fishery Management Council members say they expect to vote on the plan in April.
