A fire on a 50-foot motor yacht in South Portland that broke out just before noon has been extinguished.

Firefighters responded to the boat fire at South Port Marine at the end of Ocean Street at 11:45 a.m.

The Coast Guard spotted smoke coming from the boat and alerted emergency responders from Portland and South Portland. Land-based firefighters responded as did Portland’s fire boat.

Nobody was on board the boat and there were no injuries. South Portland Fire Department spokesman Robb Couture said the owner, who lives on the boat, had been using a generator on board to keep the boat warm during the recent bitterly cold temperatures.

The fire was out by 12:45 p.m., Couture said.

The fire did extensive damage to the boat. Crews planned to tow the boat to another location where it can be worked on more easily.
