The southbound off-ramp at Exit 80 of the Maine Turnpike in Lewiston will be closed for repairs starting at about 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
A concrete barrier damaged in a tractor-trailer accident Tuesday evening will be replaced, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Public Safety Department.
Maine State Police say the driver and owner of the big rig – 33-year-old Lee Gessin of Staten Island, N.Y. – lost control of the truck and it veered into the barrier, demolishing the truck’s cab and ripping off one of its axles. Gessin was not injured, according to McCausland.
The ramp closure is expected to last about two hours. Vehicles are advised to use Exit 75 in Auburn or Exit 86 in Sabattus as alternate routes during the closure. All other ramps will be open.
Work also continued Wednesday at the scene of another wreck, this one along I-95 in Augusta, where a tractor-trailer hauling garbage veered off the road and tipped over on Tuesday.
McCausland identified the driver, who was not injured, as Matthew Blackburn, 42, of Portland.
Two wreckers and an excavator were working to remove the truck wreckage and the garbage on Wednesday. The interstate was still reduced to one lane northbound in the area. and backups were expected to continue throughout the day.
About a mile away on I-95, the Maine Department of Transportation was continuing repair work Wednesday on Bond Brook Bridge, which was damaged in a tractor-trailer crash last week.
