AUGUSTA — Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration wants to reorganize the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
The administration is proposing to create a new unit in the department that will handle natural resources law enforcement and to eliminate some forest ranger positions. The proposal is part of LePage’s $6.3 billion budget and lawmakers will have the final say.
Commissioner Walt Whitcomb tells the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that about two dozen positions will be impacted and that some rangers have already been notified that their position will be eliminated.
Whitcomb says the governor wants to change the mind-set in the department from “strictly fire protection to addressing a lot of other concerns.”
