PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Hailey Browne scored in the second period as the University of Maine women’s hockey team beat Providence 2-0 in a Hockey East game Sunday.

Browne ripped a shot into the top corner off a feed from Emilie Brigham at 8:34 to give Maine (8-11-3, 7-4-1 Hockey East) a 1-0 lead. Kelsey MacSorley added an unassisted empty-net goal late in the third.

Meghann Treacy stopped 30 shots to earn the shutout.

Allie Morse had 27 saves for Providence (5-15-4, 4-7-1).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF R.I. 61, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 53: Jessie Ossian led all scorers with 20 points and added seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals as the Knights (6-14) defeated Southern Maine Community College (9-6) at South Portland.

Amira Jones led the Seawolves with 11 points and six rebounds. Alicia Hoyt added 10 points and seven rebounds.

(2) CONNECTICUT 92, SOUTH FLORIDA 50: Moriah Jefferson scored 15 points and added seven assists and six rebounds and the Huskies (16-1, 6-0 American Athletic) beat the Bulls (14-4, 5-1) to claim sole possession of first place in the AAC.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led UConn with 18 points. Breanna Stewart had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

(4) LOUISVILLE 67, VIRGINIA 55: Sara Hammond scored 16 of Louisville’s first 20 points and the Cardinals (17-1, 5-0 ACC) held off the Cavaliers (13-5, 3-2) in Louisville, Kentucky.

(8) MARYLAND 74, ILLINOIS 54: Brionna Jones had a career-high 24 points, as well as 14 rebounds, and the Terrapins (14-2, 6-0 Big Ten) beat the Illini (11-7, 2-4) in College Park, Maryland.

LSU 84, (10) KENTUCKY 79: Danielle Ballard scored a season-high 25 points to go with five assists, and the host Tigers (10-8, 4-2 SEC) posted their second-straight upset of a ranked team, beating the Wildcats (15-4, 4-2).

(12) NORTH CAROLINA 78, CLEMSON 56: Jessica Washington scored a career-high 20 points to help the Tar Heels (16-3, 3-2 ACC) beat the host Tigers (9-10, 1-5).

(15) MISSISSIPPI STATE 66, ALABAMA 50: Kendra Grant and Morgan Williams came off the bench to score 17 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Bulldogs (19-2, 4-2 SEC) over the Crimson Tide (11-9, 0-5) in Starkville, Mississippi.

(16) DUKE 68, MIAMI 53: Elizabeth Williams scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Blue Devils (13-5, 4-1 ACC) beat the Hurricanes (14-4, 4-1) in Durham, North Carolina.

(23) MINNESOTA 65, INDIANA 61: Carile Wagner’s jumper with 37 seconds left lifted the Golden Gophers (16-2, 5-1 Big Ten) over the Hoosiers (12-5, 2-4) in Minneapolis.

(24) RUTGERS 73, WISCONSIN 63: Cynthia Hernandez scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures for the Scarlet Knights (13-5, 4-3 Big 10) in a win over the Badgers (7-10, 3-4) in Madison, Wisconsin.

(25) SYRACUSE 64, BOSTON COLLEGE 46: Reserves Taylor Ford and Diamond Henderson combined for 24 points in the second half as the Orange (13-5, 3-2 ACC) pulled away from the Eagles (8-10, 0-5) in Boston.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(15) NORTH CAROLINA 68,VIRGINIA TECH 53: Justin Jackson scored 16 points and the Tar Heels (14-4, 4-1 ACC) held on for a sloppy win over the visiting Hokies (8-9, 0-4).
