The Green Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, located on the corner of Sheridan and Monument streets, has changed little since this photograph was published in the May 12, 1961, edition of the Portland Evening Express.

The church is one of Portland’s oldest African-American institutions, with a congregation established in the late 19th century. Its Munjoy Hill church building was dedicated in 1914.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
