The University of New England pairs photographs and words in “A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers,” an exhibition opening this week on the UNE Portland campus. The show features “Heirlooms” and 52 other black-and-white images by Maine photographer Kerry Michaels, each accompanying a quotation from a Maine woman writer such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Rachel Carson. “Gateless Garden” is based on a book of the same name by Michaels and Liza Bakewell, director of Maine Women Write, a Freeport-based writers collaborative. The show runs through April 12 at the UNE gallery, 716 Stevens Ave., Portland.
