An April 1939 Portland Press Herald news photograph shows the Portland Observatory covered in scaffolding for a renovation project sponsored by the Depression-era Works Progress Administration.

Workers are currently undertaking another restoration project, begun in 2014, to restore the building’s windows.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
