Weathervane Restaurants, an 11-restaurant chain that specializes in seafood, has closed three of its Maine locations.

The South Portland, Brewer and Waterville locations, as well as a restaurant in Bedford, New Hampshire, closed Monday morning, according to a news release from the company.

The chain’s flagship restaurant in Kittery, established in 1969, will continue to operate as the chain’s only year-round restaurant in Maine. A seasonal restaurant operates in Belfast and there are five other restaurants in New Hampshire.

Meg Cloud, a spokeswoman for the family-owned company, said she couldn’t provide specifics about the reason for the closures other than it was a combination of current economic conditions.

The lease for the South Portland restaurant at 380 Gorham Road expires at the end of the month, said Cloud, while the other locations are owned by the company. She could not provide any details about what will happen to those buildings.

Jeremy Gagner, chief operating officer and a third-generation family operator, said in the release, “My family and I are sorry to have to make this difficult decision and truly appreciate the hard work provided by our staffs and thank each of them for their dedication. We wish them success in all their future endeavors.”
