The Mob – that’s the Bonny Eagle/Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach hockey team – showed its stuff at Westbrook Monday afternoon, breaking an early tie in the second with a Kyle Whitman goal and securing a 3-1 win soon afterward with a Travis Marsh follow-up.

The win bumps the No. 9 Mob to 4-8-1 on the season. The squad lingers just outside the playoffs bracketing; they look to skate past No. 8 Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills (5-5) if possible.

Westbrook slides to 0-11-1. The struggling Blazes occupy 12th in Class A West. 2014-2015 may prove a wash for Westbrook, but every stride, pass and shot is certainly something to build off.

The Mob grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, when Cameron Roy carried the puck behind the Westbrook net, then dumped out to Chandler Doustou in front. Blazes keeper Alex Leblanc stifled Doustou’s shot, but could get a glove or a pad on Tanner McClure’s rebound.

Westbrook got the goal back early in the second period; Dylan Francoeur shoveled the puck at Mob goalie Mat Bridges’ five-hole – and it looked like Bridges stopped it. Moments later, though, it reappeared, trickling across the goal line. Whether the official’s whistle came before or after the score is impossible to say, but the point counted: 1-1.

Six minutes later, though, the Mob jumped ahead again – and they did it shorthanded, no less. Down five men to three, they were back on their heels until a clearing pass found Kyle Whitman just after he emerged from the box. Whitman carried forward for a one-on-one with Leblanc, and beat him high-right. 2-1.

Less than two minutes after that, the Mob added another, crashing Leblanc’s net. McClure on the right took a feed forward from Robbie Axelsen, a feed he shuttled across to Travis Marsh on the left for a quick wrister and 3-1, the final.

Westbrook visits Poland/Gray-New Gloucester/Oak Hill on Saturday the 31st. The 26ers are 4-6, ranked eighth in A East at the moment. The Mob, meanwhile, face the 26ers on Wednesday the 28th, then York on Saturday. The Wildcats, at 8-3, are B West’s No. 2.
