South Portland residents who are into social media now can find out more easily what’s going on in their city.

City officials have posted a “find us on” button on the home page of the city’s website, www.southportland.org. The button features a cartoon frog pointing to Facebook and Twitter logos.

The button links to a “Contact Us” page that lists various ways to get in touch with city officials and departments, including those with Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Several South Portland departments are active on social media, including police, economic development, park and recreation and City Manager Jim Gailey, whose Twitter handle is @sopomanager.

“If people have an interest in what’s happening in the city, or they want to track what various departments are doing on Facebook and Twitter, they have an easy resource now to make that connection,” Gailey said Thursday.

South Portland is among a growing number of Maine municipalities that are using social media to improve communication with their residents.
