Press Herald file photograph by Gordon Chibroski/Staff Photographer
After finding the above photo in our archives, Press Herald photographer Derek Davis went to Roy’s Shoe Shop on Stevens Avenue in Portland on Wednesday to photograph the exterior of the business exactly 28 years later, following another big snowstorm. Davis told owner Dan Lentz that he planned to photograph the shop and started shooting. After a while, Lentz came out to shovel some snow, below, as he had been doing every few hours that day. Lentz said he remembers the day – Jan. 29, 1987 – when Press Herald photographer Gordon Chibroski took the photograph above. City plows had just pushed huge chunks of icy snow into his driveway while cleaning streets several days after a snowstorm. He said he remembers it clearly because he had accidentally smacked himself in the shin with the shovel just moments before the photographer arrived.

Twenty-eight years later, Lentz, who is still runs the shoe repair business, digs out the same sidewalk after Tuesday’s nor’easter.
