Unfortunately most individuals do not take the time to look at the current circumstances of our bloated federal bureaucracy as it relates to history. I just read an excerpt from an excellent book in which a Scottish historian Alexander Tyler, wrote the following in 1787 and it is very pertinet to our country today. Mr. Tyler reviewed democratic nations of the world and the patterns of advance and decline. For the most part, the countries that were reviewed existed over a period of 200 years.

All followed the same sequence once the voter discovered that they could vote themselves (Welfare, and other forms of something for nothing, etc.) from the public treasury the results were far from positive. Welfare for the truly needy should be maintained and firmly established, but for those who work the system that is a travesty. From the moment the revelation of “free money” is made, the majority proceeds to vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury. Does this have a familiar ring to you?

The final result is the collapse of the system due to a loose fiscal policy. The same results were revealed when all of the democratic countries were reviewed. Every time the aforementioned nations progressed through the following sequence from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence and finally from dependence back to bondage.

I urge you to consider our republic and where in your opinion it stands today. In my opinion, it rests somewhere between apathy and dependence. What is your opinion? If we are not very careful we will complete this cycle in the near future. Consider these thoughts with care as the future of our children and our grandchildren rests in our hands. I ask that each of you that read this column to make a concerted effort to become involved and no longer to simply not take the time to extend yourself. If you do not, the only thing that you stand to lose is your freedom. Choose wisely and prayerfully.
