ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland — Eight players scored as the Portland Pirates cruised to an 8-1 win over the St. John’s IceCaps in an American Hockey League game Friday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Henrik Samuelson, Greg Carey and Francis Wathier in the first period.

St. John’s got on the board when Kyle MacKinnon scored a power-play goal early in the second period, but the Pirates answered with three goals in the second period and two more in the third to run away with the victory.

Joel Hanley, Jordan Szwarz and Jordan Martinook each scored in the second period for Portland.

Darian Dzuirzynski and Jordon Southorn added third period goals.

Philip Samuelsson, Eric Selleck, Tyler Gaudet, Mark Louis and Dylan Reese each had two assists for the Pirates.

Mike McKenna stopped 23 shots for Portland.

Jussi Olkinuora and Connor Hellebuyck combined for 25 saves for St. John’s.
