Michael Mewshaw will talk about his book “Sympathy for the Devil: Four Decades of Friendship with Gore Vidal,” a memoir detailing his relationship with the late Vidal, a politician, writer and playwright. Mewshaw offers a deep portrait of Vidal, who died in 2012. Vidal once said, “Beneath my cold exterior, once you break the ice, you find cold water.” Mewshaw draws a warmer portrait. He saw Vidal at his worst and best, and he portrays his friend as a complicated, nuanced man who was generous and vulnerable, as well as depressed, abrasive and arrogant.

Mewshaw has written for The New York Times, Washington Post and other publications, as well as nearly two dozen books.
