A 92-year-old Cumberland woman who was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Falmouth Wal-Mart two weeks ago died from her injuries the following day, Falmouth police said Tuesday.

Lt. John Kilbride, a spokesman for the Falmouth Police Department, identified the victim as Margaret McLeod. She was pushing a shopping cart in the crosswalk in front of the Route 1 store about 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 when a car driven by Gladys Casale, 78, also of Cumberland, struck her, Kilbride said.

McLeod’s husband, who was with her, was not injured. The impact threw her across the hood and she landed on the pavement.

“This was a low-speed impact (crash),” Kilbride said.

McLeod was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She died 24 hours later.

Casale told police that she was blinded by the sun and did not see McLeod. Casale was not arrested and has not been charged.

Kilbride said police chose not to release any information about the accident earlier because the investigation was not complete. Investigators are awaiting a report on the cause of death from the state medical examiner’s office.

“At this point, it appears to be a tragic accident, but we are still waiting for more information,” Kilbride said in an email.
