MACHIAS — The University of Maine at Machias is closing one the oldest buildings on campus because of structural concerns.

President Joyce Hedlund tells WNSX-FM that a recent assessment found problems with the 102-year-old Kimball Hall. And all of the snow that has pummeled Down East Maine hasn’t helped.

There are faculty offices, student gathering spaces and a dining area but no classrooms or housing in the building.

Hedlund says a couple of walls are bulging out and have been affected by weather. She says faculty members are being relocated and that it’s unlikely the building will reopen this semester.
