With only the Brunswick boys’ hockey team still alive at press time, it’s almost time to put the 2014-15 winter sports season to bed.

It’s a busy and triumphant week for Mid-Coast athletes and here’s a glimpse at what you might have missed:

Basketball

The last two basketball tournament survivors were both ousted last week.

In Western D boys, Hyde, the No. 3 seed, finally vanquished longtime nemesis Valley, the No. 2 seed, in last Wednesday’s semifinals, 61-47, but Saturday, in the regional final, top-ranked Forest Hills proved too tall a mountain to climb and the Phoenix were eliminated, 64-50, to finish 16-5.

Brunswick’s girls. the No. 6 seed, had upset No. 3 Oxford Hills, the defending regional champion, in the quarterfinals, but despite a great start, couldn’t handle No. 2 Lawrence in the semifinals, losing, 62-52, to the eventual regional champions to finish the year 12-8.

Swimming

Brunswick’s girls’ team stole the headlines at last week’s Class A swimming and diving state meet, tallying 246 points to hold off Cheverus (230) for the title. Mt. Ararat had 8 points and tied Leavitt for 22nd place. 

The Dragons had two individual champions and won two relays. Caitlin Tycz won the 100 butterfly in and Lynsie Russell was first in the 500 freestyle in . The 200 freestyle relay team (Emma Blair, Sophie Blair, Russell and Tycz) was first in . The 400 free relay squad (Russell, Blair, Hannah Escoe and Tycz) also placed first in .

In the boys’ meet, Brunswick had 260 points, but that was only good for runner-up, as Cheverus tallied 360. Mt. Ararat had 16 points and was 20th.

Brunswick’s Nate Samson set a new meet record in the 100 free (46.64) and the Dragons’ 200 medley relay team (Jacob Cost, Brian Hess, Ben Farrell and Henry Raker) was first in 1:41.01.

Noah Brillant led the Eagles with an eighth-place showing in diving (238.30 points).

In Class B, the Morse boys had 241 points to finish second to Cape Elizabeth (275.5). Tucker Banger was second in the 50 free (22.47) and third in the 100 free (50.11). 

In the girls’ meet, Morse (169) came fifth (Greely was first by a half-point over MDI). Ann Tolan won the 50 free (24.35) and was runner-up in the 100 free (53.11). 

Indoor track

Brunswick’s boys had 35 points and came in fourth at last week’s Class A state indoor track and field meet. Mt. Ararat had 8 points and was 16th. Falmouth edged Scarborough (59-56) for the title.

The Dragons had the top two finishers in the 800, as Christopher Tanner was first in 2 minutes, 1.4 seconds and Keenan Welzel was right behind in 2:01.58. The Eagles were paced by Andrew McCracken, who was second in the pole vault (13 feet). 

In the girls’ meet, won by Thornton Academy with 53 points, Brunswick (28) was seventh. Mt. Ararat didn’t score. The Dragons got a win from Tiffany Tanner in the 800 (2:23.86) and a first-place finish from Tessa Cassidy in the two-mile (11:43.76). 

In Class B, the Morse boys were 15th with 8 points (York won with 71), while the girls did not score. Max Lareau was second in the boys’ long jump (20-00.25).

Skiing

Mt. Ararat’s girls’ Nordic ski team was seventh and the boys came in eighth at last week’s Class A state meet. 

The girls were led by Torri Pelletier, who was 16th in the classical (21 minutes, 36.8 seconds) and 19th in the freestyle (19:02.2). Brunswick didn’t score as a team, but Lena Martin had the 11th-fastest time in the freestyle (18:24.0) and the 13th-best time in the classic (21:14.3). 

Kellen Radulski led the Eagles boys with a 35th place finish in the classical (21:26.3). Ted Burns was 37th in the freestyle (18:14.6).

Boys’ hockey

Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team earned the No. 6 seed in Eastern Class A after downing visiting Cony in the regular season finale, 3-2, to finish 11-7. The Dragons were at No. 3 Bangor (12-6) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Brunswick lost, 10-2, at home to the Rams Feb. 14. If the Dragons sprung an upset, they’d likely face No. 2 Lewiston (12-5-1) in Saturday’s semifinals in Lewiston. The Eastern A Final is Tuesday of next week in Lewiston and the Class A state game is Saturday, March 7, in Lewiston.

Mt. Ararat wound up 3-15 and ninth (but only seven teams qualified in Eastern A). The Eagles closed with a 4-3 overtime loss to Windham and a 3-2 overtime win over Skowhegan.
