WESTBROOK — The medical condition of a Rite Aid employee – who had to be taken to a Portland hospital after a car blasted through the storefront and struck her – has dramatically improved since Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Maine Medical Center said Monday night 66-year-old Sharla Cummings of Westbrook was in fair condition. Cummings was listed in critical condition Sunday night.

Cummings was standing near a cash register at the Rite Aid on Main Street in Westbrook when a car operated by 84-year-old Philo Street of Gorham went through the storefront and hit Cummings. Street told police he was attempting to park the car when he accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake to his Lexus ES 330 sedan.

Street and his wife, 70-year-old Diana Street, were both treated at the scene by medics from the Westbrook Fire Department. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
