Portland Press Herald headline: “Audit: Some in shelters have $20,000 in the bank.”

I am so sick of the radical right throwing red meat to its radical base and calling it political discourse. On the surface, what could sound more inflammatory than the above headline?

But if you were unemployed or underemployed, as virtually all homeless persons are, and $20,000 was the total amount of assets in your name, what kind of decent permanent housing could you secure for yourself or your family?

We all read the same real estate ads, both “For Sale” and “For Rent.”
