MADISON, N.J. — Meghan Gribbin went 5 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final 22 seconds to help the University of New England hold on for a 54-50 victory over Catholic University in the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament Friday.

Kelly Coleman scored 20 points to pace the Nor’easters (24-5), who reached the tournament’s second round for the third straight season. Lauren Hayden added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Catholic (19-9) led by as many as five points early in the second half before UNE rallied to take the lead for good on a basket in the paint by Alanna Vose with 9:42 remaining. That sparked a 7-0 run that gave UNE a 42-36 lead.

The Nor’easters will play Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham at 5 p.m. Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BATES 92, ST. VINCENT 80: Graham Safford scored 30 points and dished out 10 assists to lead the Bobcats (20-6) past the Bearcats (22-7) at Galloway, New Jersey, in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Mike Boornazian added 22 points and Marcus Delpeche chipped in with 14 for Bates, which was making its first NCAA tournament appearance in program history.

The Bobcats outrebounded St. Vincent 42-31 behind a game-high 16 from Malcolm Delpeche.

Bates closed the first half with a 10-4 run to go into halftime with a 35-25 advantage. The Bobcats put the game out of reach early in the second with a 15-1 run that extended their lead to 22.

Bates advances to play Stockton at 7 p.m. Saturday.

BASEBALL

FLORIDA 5, MAINE 0: Logan Shore struck out five and scattered five hits in eight innings for the second-ranked Gators (12-2) in a win over the Black Bears (4-10) at Gainesville, Florida.

Florida took advantage of three Maine errors during a four-run second inning and added a solo homer by Christian Hicks in the bottom of the sixth.

Luke Morrill had two singles for the Black Bears. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes gave up one run on three hits in five innings of relief.

SOFTBALL

MAINE 5, ROBERT MORRIS 1: Alexis Bogdanovich struck out six in a seven-hitter and Felicia Lennon had two hits, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Black Bears (5-7) past the Colonials (8-7) at Clearwater, Florida.

Erika Leonard and Emj Fogel had RBI singles for Maine.
