SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Jordan Martinook and Henrik Samuelsson each had a goal and an assist as five players scored for the Portland Pirates (31-22-3-1) in a 5-2 victory over the Syracuse Crunch (33-16-8-0) on Friday night in front of a crowd of 5,688 at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena.

The Crunch opened the scoring 9:45 into the game on a goal by Mike Angelidis. The Pirates came back to tie it just 32 seconds later on a goal by Darian Dziurzynski.

Dylan Reese gave the Pirates the lead with a goal with 3:41 left in the opening period. Portland extended the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Brendan Shinnimin with 2:05 remaining.

The teams traded goals late in the second period, with Cody Kunyk scoring for Syracuse with 4:07 remaining. Samuelsson scored 57 seconds later to push the Pirates’ lead back to two goals.

Martinook closed out the scoring for the Pirates with an empty-net goal with 51 seconds remaining.

Mike McKenna finished with 22 saves for the Pirates, who outshot the Crunch 25-24. Kristers Gudievskis made 20 saves for the Crunch.

Neither team had any success on the power play, with Portland going 0-for-6 and Syracuse failing to convert on any of its five chances.

The Pirates remain two points behind the Providence Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Providence defeated Hershey 2-1 on Friday night.
