SALEM, N.H. — Police say a man who moved back in with his parents reported that he chased away a burglar who stole their money — only to have the cash in his bedroom.

Police said after speaking with 32-year-old David Delaurier in Salem, New Hampshire, on Sunday, physical evidence at the scene did not corroborate his account of the break-in and chase.

The parents, who were not at home at the time, eventually arrived and determined a specific amount of money was missing from their bedroom. Police said they found the money in Delaurier’s bedroom. He was charged with burglary and false reports to law enforcement.

Delaurier was jailed overnight and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday; it could not immediately be determined if he had a lawyer.
